“Why Lifelong Learning Matters: Balancing Career Growth and Personal Fulfillment”

"Lifelong learning" is increasingly being promoted in the Netherlands. This concept stems from the rapid pace of global developments that are constantly rendering old jobs obsolete and creating new ones requiring new knowledge and techniques. Thus, continuous learning is the future. But who determines when, how, and what you will learn, and who covers the costs?

Are there subsidies?

Since I know I am now writing for a broad international audience (thank you all), I will briefly explain how it works in the Netherlands. In simple terms, like in many other countries, there are subsidies available for employers and employees to pursue education and training. This means that the costs do not always fall on the shoulders of employers and employees alone. Often, there are arrangements for employees as well. If the education or training is entirely relevant to the employee's work for the employer, the employer often covers these costs, which can then be deducted from their taxes.

Are the costs fairly distributed?

If the education is something from which the employee might personally benefit, they may have to cover part of the cost. Typically, if the employer contributes to these activities, the employee must sign a statement obligating them to stay with the employer for a longer period. Employers can refuse to cover costs if the benefits of the training or education are solely for the employee. Many employers adhere to this method, thus helping their employees advance in their careers. Of course, there are many exceptions, and many of you may not recognize these situations in your own countries. All these arrangements are designed to ensure that the employee grows, which in turn helps the employer's business grow, generally leading to more profit for the owner.

What does the average employee do with all these growth aspirations?

Often, employees are happy to be able to follow training and education, as it usually means continuity in their work and income. However, some employees find this "driving force" challenging. They prefer to continue their work in the "normal" way and will look for another job if necessary. They are not chasing more knowledge, power, and salary. They prioritize their home, family, and personal life. These exceptions are often the ones who ask their overly ambitious colleagues, "Do we live to work, or do we work to enjoy this beautiful world?"

Why do we live?

A beautiful philosophical question, but can you answer it for yourself directly? Do you live in a wonderful and loving family, or do you prefer to be at work? Do you work so hard to earn enough money to spend a few weeks each year in a beautiful exotic vacation paradise? Does this mean you only know those exotic places and barely your own surroundings? Are you one of those people who dares to say after retirement that they did everything right? The family is financially well off, the mortgage on an oversized house is almost paid off, your often dissatisfied children’s education is completed and paid for by you, and there's even a nice inheritance waiting for them because you think it's important, and they are looking forward to it.

Do you really go all out?

People who have retired often say, "So, it's done, now we can enjoy." Do you recognize these words from someone who is sixty-seven years old (the retirement age in the Netherlands)? Enjoying with stiff limbs, sleep apnea, poor vision and hearing. Really enjoying, having nothing more to do? Suppose you reach the fantastic age of eighty or older, then you have thirteen years, which is 5.15384 percent of your entire life, left to "enjoy your life." That 5.15384 percent is a lot compared to people in other parts of the world for whom retirement is a concept they will never reach or have. Know that I hold these people in high regard. But also think about those who respond to your comments by saying, "If you wanted to stop working earlier, you should have stopped earlier, started your own business, taken more risks."

Why didn’t you take risks?

After a lifetime of learning and raising several children, and all the tensions that came with it, you can finally enjoy your retirement. You did your best for all those people who were wiser, lazier, and more enterprising than you. As a civil servant or otherwise, the entrepreneurs you worked for throughout your life may have enjoyed and seen more of their surroundings, but you can be proud because you did everything to contribute to the world’s continuous learning and development. Proudly you sit in your senior chair by the geraniums, looking outside. Your children love you for their financial independence. You can barely see, hear, or walk. Your "old" employers were happy with you, and you discovered last month that the nature around your house is beautiful and something you have never seen before. Who is right, the worker or the enjoyer, you keep wondering.

Was Your Illiterate Bossing Day Today? Read the one here

Everyone in life once face illiterate bossing day, and instantly we break the relationship with the bossing person, in fact, with the ruling person. Here is the example I have shared how to overcome this.

Most of us start our professional careers, and somewhere in the professional terms, we have a manager in life. Don’t worry, if you are a housewife, and you have been a great leader of the family that’s quite spectacular. However, most of the families have clashes between Mother in law and DIL daughter-in-law.

In my office, recently, one of my team leader said that never let illiterate bossing on you if you think you have more knowledge. Usually, an organization hires a TL and manager who have good knowledge of handling team members but have no product knowledge.

Therefore, many of them get fail at their task when they have less product idea. Imagine if you're a manager, keeps you shouting on the silly mistakes. Those mistakes that have less important, but then you're caught by your TL or manager who has no product knowledge. Imagine what would happen? What will you do, you think? You will give no importance because you complete your work every day you get an assign. As well as, do your production on time and at the end of the day. Furthermore, if your boss shouts at you on those silly mistakes then definitely you will get angry and next day onwards you will stop doing extra work.

Who would be the best manager according to you?
One who has complete product information and the one who has good people management skills? I believe, the one who has a grasp on both the side. In the service industry, it is equally influential.

In a family, if it is happening to a newly wedded woman trying to teach a mother-in-law who is well experienced then it is wrong, and I blame the mother-in-law for that reason. Therefore, without having knowledge shouting on someone who is respected in the family, bringing such a situation at home is the fault of the experienced one.

They failed to maintain the culture of the family, and couldn't hold on to convince the new person at home.

You must be confused about what I mean to say exactly? If the expert person does not know how to handle the situation, then illiterate definitely teach you irrespective of the position and power. Furthermore, every person in life has to pass this phase of leadership, some might work for long and on the other hand, few of them for very short time.

This has happened to one of my friend who was working in a XYZ company, He has been a subject-matter expert and doing his work with pride. Suddenly, his manager got a new job and all his efforts he had put for achieving the next level ruined. When his new manager taken his first meeting, he introduces his people management skills. He had been in the management field for seven years and received the best manager award in 2018.

My friend had observed that he got a different attitude and felt it was difficult to understand him. Once upon a time, while he was in the meeting, his mobile was not on the silent mode, and thus his manager shouted in front of all the team members.
He immediately left the meeting and send an email subjected, Resignation Letter he had felt a public shame and lost his credit he had built for years. He was sure that this new manager is not going to promote him to the next level.
The black clouds surrounded him, he couldn't meet his daily expectations.

What had happened to him? Furthermore, after he resigned, he was jobless for the next six months, and he had to join another company on the same level. What had happened with my friend? The situation created by only my friend, and ultimately, he suffered. He did not even get a chance to know his manager. Having product good knowledge does not help, you must have a grasp on management too. As he did not understand from the perspective of management, and thus, he couldn't control on his anger. It wasn't bossing day, instead the matter of adherence and etiquettes.

It has become a very crucial part of any corporate job. Therefore, because of this, many employees leave the organization. Maybe my friend had good knowledge of what he is doing but if he was unable to handle people, situation, and the client. However, it is difficult for someone to crack down on the next level.

It was a Diwali in the next two days, and he had already planned his leaves in advance. The mail circulated to every TL and managers one month in advance about the cancellation of the leaves. The patience and anger were fighting in the head of everyone. However, no one were aware about it.

Before two days starting Diwali holiday, a sudden call from AVP hit my mailbox and the entire floor gathered too. It was an announcement of no leaves on Diwali. Before, the favourite people used to get weekend working and were earning double amount.

It was too much of pain when someone had already planned the leaves. And sudden you received an email from your TL that your leaves cancelled.

How to release anger in one minute?

I was sure about favouritism there. How to release anger was easy as cherry on cake, we just have to find the way my friend did. He said that he got up from his desk. Went straight to his TL and asked the reason his leaves cancelled. He suddenly got up from the chair and started shouting,

“You guys are not doing production, you're leaving the work undone. It was not expected, and you have to finish the work today and then go home.”

Also, I could hear the voice of his team leader from my desk. His voice was too loud that what he wanted to discuss had kept aside, and he kept shouting. What he did? It will be surprised you. In Front of him, he simply closed his eyes, listen to him carefully nodding my head he came back to his desk.

I can’t tell you how he was frustrated and irritated when I met him.

Immediately he came to my desk and composed a letter, his resignation letter. But then he got a call from his parents and asked him to transfer urgent cash. He realized right there that this job is so important to him.

And grumbling pronunciation that did not suit at all. Within a minute, he laughed out loud. How can one send away terrible frustration in one go? He got a refreshed and his anger vanished to normal. All-day he continued to imagine watching face of his boss like that and laughing. That time passed, he took it positively, and things changed.
