Ganesh Utsav in India | 1 Early truth about its origin

Ganesh visarjan in India

In India, especially in Maharashtra, Ganesh Utsav is celebrated widely. Almost every alternate house you could find a little Ganesha in the corner with a well decorated shed and lighting. This is a celebration for kids and adults, and most of the devotees arrange dinner at their home and invite their colleagues, relatives, and friends to join them. However, there were motives behind the festival of Ganesh Utsav.

I can remember, when I was a kid, going to my friend's house for decorations the day before the welcome of Ganesh utsav. We used to spend a whole night in decoration. My village was small , consisting of around a thousand houses, with a big temple at a corner near the river. The temple was the main attraction of our village, and many other people used to come for rituals at the river. When I was in high school, I asked my father, ``Why does our village ever attract so many people who travel from miles to do rituals?" My father patted my back and told me that our village river has a special place. It has uttar vahini (the river flows in the north direction), which helps complete the rituals as per the Indian vedas.

Thus, due to the temple and river, our village was considered one of the best in the nearby area. Hence, it was also considered a place of devotees where the cultural celebrations, including Durga Puja in Navratri, idol Ganesh Utsav, and many other celebrations happened. I also got another opportunity to ask my dad why we celebrate Ganesh Utsav. However, that question was partially answered by my dad. Therefore, I got the perfect answer when I read about history and culture in my school.

Ganesh Utsav in India had started by Bal Gandhar Tilak

Ganesh Utsav was started in Maharashtra by Bal Gandhar Tilak. The reason behind it was to bring people together to share important things and unity among them. However, the festival has been celebrated across the country during the season. It is a primarily Hindu festival but is celebrated by almost all religions, as India has been a secular country for many years. On the first day, the clay murti of Ganesha gets installed in the house. However, prior to the day, decoration is being done by selecting a proper place in the house as per the Vastu Shastra. Mostly the murti installation is setup facing east or north, which is considered the best direction as per the Hindu veda.

The welcome of Ganesha is done with music, bands, and firecrackers, and the same is repeated while sending off on the 10th day. The great Indian saint, Osho, said that devotees should not be bound to God to achieve primordial self. He gave us a fine example of Ganesha. The moral of the story is simple. Whatever the rituals are, use them. Don’t stick to them too long. Do not be bound to it. Ganesh utsav celebrations have historically only lasted ten days. There is a story behind it.

The ten long days of celebration are followed by a visargan in the river on the final day. Thus, people use traditional rituals, prayers, aartis, and all are gone with Visarjan after ten days of worship. In short, Osho says, dance, pray, meditate, and worship, but do not indulge in it for long. "It is a way; it is a path but not a destination in life."

Begining of the Festival Ganesh Utsav from Kasaba Ganapati

Kasba Ganapathi is an ancient deity, a murti of God Ganesha, present even 400 years ago. It was found by the mother of Shivaji Bhosale. It was Dadaji Konddeo who was the first person who discovered the murti of Kasba Ganpati and he reported it to Jijau in 1630. Since the Bhosale family started celebrating and following Kasba Ganpati, Peshawas and the entire Pune city have been witness for years to Lord Ganesh's celebration in Shaniwar Wada.

However, later in Pune, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who told the story of the temple of Kasba, said that it is a premier murti of Ganesh and the first respect should be given to Kasba Ganpati only. Hence, every year on the 10th day, Kasba Ganpati gets Visarjan first and then follows the rest of Ganeshas.

Being positive is a door flushing negativity from your body

A very short story I would like to tell you during a Ganesh Visarjan. It is a straight and simple to understand of being positive and how negativity flushes out from our body. I was travelling in the car heading to the railway station to drop my parents. Before I leave the house, I did not check that today was a state holiday due to Ganesh Visarjan. (An India festival of God Ganesha) due to which the entire Pune city was blocked by traffic of humans and bands. However, I got to know this when I caught in the heart of the city. I left the house as per the regular time, according to the distance it was going to take me 1 hour and 35 min to reach the station to catch the train. I was driving in the cloudy and slippery roads. However, there was no rain. As well as, driving the car in an average speed as I was certain that it was going to take us to the destination 20 mins in advance. Therefore, I was also damn sure that no Indian trains, buses, or aeroplanes hardly leaves the station on the time.

An unexpected cyclone of weird thoughts slowly started gathering in my head and began to play with my conscious mind. It happened when I saw the roads crowded with public dancing, throwing colours on the streets and taking idol Ganesha with greeting of loud music to Visarjan ghat. Indistinct vision of me could understand that both sided footpath were crowded, and the road was in such a condition that a kid couldn’t cross the road. Furthermore, you can guess how one could move the car? There were series of idol Ganesha on the big trucks along with their respective bands in front (with sets of huge musical instruments) and community members chattering and cheering.

The sweat swiftly appeared on the tip of my nose like early morning dew drops. However, they appear in the cold, but on my nose, they were the witness of the stressful situation and lack of concentration. The passengers on the back seat (my father, mother, daughter, and my wife) were eager to go to my native place. Therefore, looking at the situation, I was damn sure that all are going to miss the train. All the members in the car were talking negative as below,

  • We should have left the house early.
  • Nobody knew that today was Ganesh Visarjan.
  • What if the train left, we will lose the huge amount today.
  • It could have been better if we booked the ticket for the next day.

There is an existence of unconscious connection between mind and situation

Every one of us, including me, were supporting negative thoughts. My leg on the accelerator was trembling, and unexpected speed could be seen in the movement of the vehicle. The rushing was not expected in the crowded roads. It was probably the sign of danger. My wife was constantly checking on Google map to find a possible way free of traffic to reach the destination on the time. However, everyone were assuming that in 10 minutes to grab the train in such a crowded place seemed no other option. Due to the wrong turns, every so often we could come on the same road we were before. I was as a driver completely lost, every man and woman, kids and roads with shops were looking the same. My parents and wife got that I am driving weird and in hurry. I voice of positiveness brought me back to life. The voice I was looking for to make my mind stable, confident, and fresh.

“Don’t worry. Forget about the train and money. Keep yourself calm and focused on the road and drive safely.”

It was my dad who uttered it with full confidence and cheerfully. I breathe out slowly with a relief of sigh. The rise of heat instantly flushed away as soon as I opened the windows. On the arrival of the one sentence with positive note, I was feeing the no more emptiness, free of burden and refreshed. Not only me, but all the people in the car was experiencing a bit relaxed and freshen up. We safely reached the railway station half an hour late. As soon as, we got down, everyone rushed out of the car and started their furious legs to move forward, pull out their bags out from the boot. I quickly parked the car and followed all of them to the platform and looking at their situation I wondered, everyone were surprised.

The train was right there waiting for us. Everyone occupied their seats, got relaxed and looked happy. What if nobody start with a positive note? Something bad could have happened on the road. It was positiveness which attract the negative thoughts.
